Mafraq Governorate

It is located at the northeastern part of the Kingdom. Its boundaries extend to Iraq to the east, Syria to the north, and Saudi Arabia to the south and east. Its area is (26551) km2, and its highest elevation above sea level reaches to 915 m at Rihab. Its area equals to 29.6% of the total area of the Kingdom, and is considered the second largest governorate, after Ma’an Governorate. The northern Badia (desert) region covers most of the Governorate.

Mafraq city was previously named (Al-Faddain), then named Al-Mafraq (junction city), for its location at the cross-road of international roads, as it connects the Kingdom with the Republic of Iraq via Al-Karama border point, which is 285 km far from the Governorate’s center, in addition to Jaber border point which connects the Kingdom with the Syrian Arab Republic, which is 20 km far from the center of the Governorate.

The Governorate was created in 14/11/1985. It consists of four counties and (10) districts. The number of municipalities in Mafraq Governorate is (18).

Mafraq Governorate is situated at the northeastern part of the Kingdome, and extends to Iraq to the east, Syria to the north, and Saudi Arabia to the south and east.

Governorate’s population is (549948) inhabitants.
Governorate’s area: (26550.5 km2).
Population density: (20.7) inhabitants per square kilometer.

Governorate’s Relative Features:

The Governorate is situated at a cross-road of international roads that connect the Kingdome with Syria, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
There are plenty of archeological and touristic sites in the Governorate, most importantly are Al-Faddain, Rihab, Umm Al-Jimal, Burqu Dam in Al-Ruwaished, Jawa location in Deir Al-Kahaf, and other locations.
