Madaba Governorate

Madaba Governorate is located in the middle of fertile plains at (35) km far to the south of Amman. It had been built by the Moabite in the 9th century BC. In the 2nd century BC. It had been included within the lands of the Nabataeans State until 106 AD, when it was included into the Arabia reign. As referenced in ancient Arabian sources, Madaba was the home of the tribes of the Ghassanids in the 6th century AD. It had been extended during the Roman era, flourished during the Byzantine and Umayyad times, become famous in the art of mosaics, and became one of the important religious and commercial centers in the land of Greater Syria. Most important sites in Madaba are Mount Nebo (Seyagha), the Church of the Map, The Church of the Apostles, “Al-Lahun archeological site, Thieban ( Dibon), and Jallool archeological site.

Madaba name was derived from an Aramaic (Syriac) compound word (Meia D’abia), where the first word means water, and the second (abia) means fruit, while the letter (d) is a connection proverb. The two-word name means the fruits water. Madaba name remained as is in the ancient sources without variation up until the Mid-Islamic era.

Madaba Governorate is characterized by the existence of religious and health tourism elements for having religious sites at various locations, and the salty mineral substances at Ma’een hot springs, further to the diversity of its climate at the various regions of the Governorate that attract tourists and people seeking outdoor entertainment to attend these locations all around the year.

Geographical Location:

Madaba Governorate is located south of Amman, and about (35) km far from it. It is situated at an elevation of about 774 m above sea level. Its history goes back to the Iron age (1600 BC – 1200 BC).

The Governorate consists of two counties, five districts, and seven municipalities.

Governorate’s population is (189192) inhabitants.
Governorate’s area: (940 km2).
Population density: (201.3) inhabitants per square kilometer.

The Governorate is uniquely characterized by the diversity and variability of tourism, religious, health, entertainment, cultural, and historical tourism.
Madaba Governorate is characterized by the diversity of its terrains, where it is famous for the wide plains that supply the Kingdome with plenty of cereals, the Ghour and Semi-Ghour regions that are considered the sources of producing vegetables, fruits, and olive.
The high rate of educated people.
It is characterized by its agriculture concern for the suitable climatic conditions, water conditions, and fertile soil.
The closeness of the Governorate to the Capital, which enhanced the implementation of development projects, taking challenges and seizing opportunities.
